Colonia del Sacramento is Uruguay’s oldest city — a 17th-century Portuguese settlement on the Río de la Plata with a compact UNESCO-listed old town. We had a few hours here before the ferry back to Buenos Aires, enough to wander the cobblestones, climb past the lighthouse ruins and feel that time had stopped somewhere between Europe and the river.
