At a glance
Spain feels like several countries stitched together — each region with its own rhythm, food and light. You can go from GaudÃ’s Barcelona to Moorish Granada to the volcanic caldera on Tenerife in the space of a week, and still feel like you’ve only scratched the surface.
Barcelona was our first trip as a couple, back in 2012 and we returned twice to the city of Gaudà since then. It does suffer from the crowds during the season, but it works beautifully as a off-season city break, with its mild weather and beautiful architecture.
The famous triangle of Sevilla, Córdoba and Granada is a must-see for anyone visiting Andalusia, each city offering a different perspective on the history of the region and its multicultural heritage. Add Costa del Sol to the mix and you have a perfect itinerary for a week-long trip.
Then there is Tenerife and the Canary Islands, a totally different world. Mount Teide rises above a volcanic caldera, while the rocky northern coastline invites hikers to explore the rugged terrain with stunning views over the Atlantic Ocean.
